Amsalu Bedemo (PhD)
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the official website of Assosa University.
Assosa University is one of the public higher education institutions in Ethiopia established in 2011. It was founded in Benishangul Gumuz region, Assosa Town; located 670 kms away from Addis Ababa to west direction (180 kms away from Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam). The University commenced its teaching activity in 2011 by enrolling 1043 students of its first batch in the regular program under five faculties. Currently, the university is offering undergraduate programs in 19 fields of studies for more than 3000 students both in regular and continuous education programs. The University is planning to open five additional academic programs in 2013/14 which will increase the number to 24. The total number of students is expected to exceed 5500 (3700 regular and the remaining continuing education program) in this academic year. For the last two years the university has been conducting its teaching activity in the temporary campus (i.e., Vocational and Technical College of Agriculture of the region) commonly called “Amba 14” which is 14 kms far away from Assosa town. Thanks to the efforts made by dedicated staff members that, now we have managed to move to our main campus.
Since its establishment, great deals of efforts have been made by staff members as well as students to realize peaceful conducting of teaching-learning activity. The harmonized curriculum was put in place and the staff is properly implementing the curriculum to produce competent graduates. Moreover, participation of our young and dedicated academic staff in research and community service activities is encouraging one. The University has prepared its strategic plan last year in line with the Growth and Transformation Plan of the country. Following the strategic plan the University commenced the implementation of different reform programs such as Business Process Reengineering (BPR), the Balanced Score Card and Kaizen programs as tools of planning and management.
Since the region where the university is located has a natural resource potential with adequate researches not yet done, I feel that much is expected from the University in conducting problem solving researches and providing community services to the society so as to benefit the community in the area. In this regard, the University has an interest and a plan to work in collaboration with different universities and research institutions inland and abroad in the areas of teaching, research and community service provision.
